Heart Mobile Village has seen 106 families move out of the mobile home park to make way for new jail

Two brothers are the last residents living in the Heart Mobile Village, after a year of residents leaving the mobile home park to make way for the new Jackson County jail.

Gary Schaefer said that he and his brother, Michael, received money to move from the mobile home park, but it's not enough.

A Jackson County court exhibit shows Gary Schaefer got $9,000 to move out by Jan. 15, and his brother received $5,000.

"As soon as they gave us the check, they told us to present the titles to our camper, and they'll give us the rest," Gary Schafer said. “As soon as we did that, they were like, 'Nope, we've given you all your money.'"

Schaefer said that he and his brother are not moving until he gets $6,000 more.

Meanwhile, Schaefer has a generator working since the electricity was cut to his home.

The water was out too.

"Our water was turned off. We had to turn it back on here," he said as he pointed to the water meter.

Meanwhile, a Jackson County judge has ordered the brothers gone, and pay back more than $5,000.

"The county looks forward to a favorable resolution in this matter and taking the next step in this process on the property," said Jackson County spokeswoman Marshanna Smith in a written statement.

The new jail will cost about $260 million and is set to be complete by late 2024.
